FY 2025-26 Auto Sales
Passenger vehicle (sedan, SUV) sales increased by 8.3 percent to 4.7 million units in the full fiscal year 2025-26, compared to 4.34 million units in the previous year. Following the government's reduction in GST rates in September, companies reduced vehicle prices, making car purchases easier and more attractive for customers.
Auto industry experts say the market has experienced three major benefits: a reduction in GST, interest rate cuts by the RBI, and income tax relief. These factors have led to more cash and increased car purchasing power. This is why sales have seen a sharp rise in the second half of the year.
Auto sales of major companies
Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker, maintained its lead with sales of 1.82 million vehicles in FY 2025-26. Tata Motors ranked second with 66,192 units sold in March. Mahindra & Mahindra followed in third with 60,272 units, and Hyundai Motor India in fourth with 55,064 units. For the full year, Mahindra & Mahindra surpassed Tata Motors to take second place with sales of 6.6 lakh units.
According to Tata Motors, consumer interest is now rapidly shifting towards green technology. CNG vehicle sales increased by 20 percent, while electric vehicle (EV) sales surpassed 200,000 units.
